Casinos Want Net Betting January 17, 2003
Casino operators and the racing industry are expected to urge the Federal Government to amend its Internet gambling laws in a review due in a few months. The Australian Casino Association is expected to push for the right to offer online gaming to Australian gamblers.
Under the laws introduced in 2001, local cyber casinos must deal only with foreign gamblers. Australian Casino Association executive director Chris Downy said the association believed this clause should be scrapped, though it had not completed its response to the Government's review.
"We will look at the Government's issues paper before making any decisions on what goes in our submission," Mr Downy said.
"But on that issue our position has never changed."
The racing industry, exempted from the laws, is expected to push for this to continue, along with a ban on overseas Internet bookmakers fielding on Australian races. Australian Racing Board chief executive Andrew Harding said offshore betting sites were taking bets on local races but paying no turnover tax to the local industry. Communications Minister Richard Alston announced the review of the laws yesterday, saying it was required under the terms of the original Act.
